Duquesne University – St. Martin Hall

Location: Pittsburgh, PA
Beds: 323
Square Footage: 109,000

This redevelopment project began in May 2021. Originally constructed as a traditional dormitory with double-occupancy bedrooms and community bathrooms, St. Martin Hall was an obsolete prototype in need of significant upgrades. As a culturally significant building in the heart of Duquesne University’s campus, demolition was not an option. The building was redesigned to a suite-style configuration with new bathrooms and kitchenettes in every unit and a mix of single and double-occupancy bedrooms.

The former common area restrooms and lounges were converted into dedicated spaces for study, group engagement and community kitchens. Other upgrades included improvements to the ground floor entrance for increased efficiency and modernization of the building’s mechanical, electrical, plumbing and fire protection systems. The revitalized St. Martin Hall reopened on schedule for the Fall 2022 semester with 267 units containing 323 beds.
